India had a steel stock of 1.824 million tonne after real consumption of 73.33 million toone by the end of 2012-13, said the Union Minister of Steel Beni Prasad Verma recently. By the end of last June this year, the country had a steel stock of 1.626 million tonne, he added.

Centre to sanction Rs 4,130 cr to Bihar for rural roads

The Union Rural Development Ministry has approved Rs 4,130 crore for construction of 5,700 km of rural roads in Bihar. The amount okayed by the centre is said to be the highest allotment for the State in the past 12 years. The decision to allot the amount under Prime Minister Gramin Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) in the current financial year was taken by the ministry in July, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh said in Patna.

Illegal mining in Maharashtra rises

A media report quoted a government statement which shows that over 40,000 cases of illegal mining were recorded in Maharashtra in 2011-12 and this was far higher than around 26,000 cases in 2009-10.
